Foreign Kids at Chinese Schools

Statistics from the Division of Exit and Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau shows that the number of foreign kids studying at Nanjing's elementary schools is increasing rapidly. At present, the number of long-term staying foreigners here is 11,321, 1.5 times of the number of 4,583 in 2002. statistics from Nanjing Education Bureau shows that 234 foreign kids studies at elementary schools in Nanjing at 2002, most of whom were from 27 countries and regions including England, France, Germany, South Korea and Japan. However, the number has increased nine times to 2,149 by this October. They are from 41 countries and regions. Foreign kids attending short-term exchange programs are excluded in this statistics.

Multi options are available for foreign kids to study in Nanjing

First option is the Nanjing International School, a school especially for foreign kids. Ten years ago, it was only an unofficial educational organization. However today, it has become a full-time school authorized by International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Education here covers from kindergarten to senior high school. Locating at a beautiful campus at Xianlin University Town, it receives more than 400 students from 25 countries and regions.

Another option is the international sections of comprehensive schools. At present, such schools having most foreign kids are Nanjing Experimental International School, the Affiliated Experimental School of Nanjing Normal University, Hexi Campus of Jinling School, Nanjing 21st Century Private Bilingual School and Nanjing Zhenhe Foreign Language School.

The West Youfu Street Elementary School established its international section this September, the first experiment section in Chinese in Jiangsu province. Only three elementary schools are authorized to conduct this kind experiment teaching in China.

Most of foreign kids in Nanjing go to public schools nearby universities or places where many foreigners live. They have the same curriculum as Chinese students.

The Affiliated Elementary School of Nanjing Normal University, East Beijing Road School are among the best and well-known ones. Besides, less-known names such as Hankou Road Elementary School, Nanchang Road Elementary School and Gulou Central School are also welcoming more and more foreign students. Since its first South Korean student at 2002, Zhongshan Elementary School has been known as a school with UN on campus, with foreign students as many as over 50 from South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, France, England and USA.
